The short answer
To self-host n8n, a Hostinger KVM 2 VPS (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM) is the plan we would pick for a small business: it runs n8n with no limit on workflows or executions for $8.79/month on a 24-month term, renewing at $14.99/month. KVM 1 works for a few light workflows. n8n Cloud is simpler but charges by execution.
The rest of this guide shows where those numbers come from, what changes when the promo price ends, and the exact setup path, so you can decide in one read instead of ten tabs.
Why we self-host n8n for small businesses
At Axel SEO we build automations for local service businesses: a web form that lands in the CRM and texts the owner, a review request that goes out after a job is marked done, a weekly report that arrives without anyone opening a dashboard. Most of these run on n8n, and we host client sites on Hostinger, so this is the stack we know from the inside.
What we see again and again: the first month on any automation tool is cheap, then executions pile up. A form that triggers three workflows, a CRM sync that runs every five minutes, a chatbot answering at night. On a plan billed per execution, the bill grows with your success. On your own VPS, it stays flat.
n8n self-hosted vs n8n Cloud: what you are really choosing
n8n is the same editor either way. The difference is who runs the server and how you pay for it.
n8n Cloud is hosted by n8n. You sign up, build, and never think about servers. Pricing is based on monthly workflow executions: the Starter plan includes 2,500 executions and the Pro plan 10,000, with limits on how many run at the same time.
Self-hosted n8n is the free Community Edition running on a server you rent. There is no execution count and no limit on workflows. You pay for the server, and you are responsible for updates and backups.
| Option | What you get | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n Cloud Starter | 2,500 executions/month, 5 concurrent, hosted by n8n | €20/month, billed annually | Testing n8n or a handful of low-volume workflows |
| n8n Cloud Pro | 10,000 executions/month, up to 50 concurrent | €50/month, billed annually | Teams that never want to touch a server |
| Hostinger KVM 1 + n8n | 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe, unlimited executions | $6.49/month (24 months), renews at $11.99 | A few light workflows, one business |
| Hostinger KVM 2 + n8n | 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe, unlimited executions | $8.79/month (24 months), renews at $14.99 | Most small businesses and small agencies |
| Hostinger KVM 4 + n8n | 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe, unlimited executions | $12.99/month (24 months), renews at $28.99 | AI agents, heavy data, queue mode |
Which Hostinger VPS plan runs n8n well
n8n itself is light. What eats memory is what your workflows do: large spreadsheets, files, images, long AI conversations held in memory, many workflows firing at the same second.
KVM 1 (4 GB RAM) handles simple automations comfortably: forms to email, CRM updates, scheduled reports. If n8n is the only thing on the server and your workflows move small pieces of data, it is enough.
KVM 2 (8 GB RAM) is where we would start a business that plans to grow its automations. The extra memory is headroom for AI nodes, bigger payloads and a database running next to n8n, and the price gap from KVM 1 is a little over two dollars a month on the 24-month term.
KVM 4 (16 GB RAM) makes sense when you run AI agents all day, process files, or want queue mode, where n8n splits work across several worker processes. Hostinger offers a separate "n8n with queue mode" template for this.
Setup: from empty VPS to your first workflow
Hostinger removes the part that usually stops people: installing Docker and n8n by hand. The path looks like this.
- Buy the VPS plan and choose the "Ubuntu 24.04 with n8n" template during setup (or "n8n with queue mode" on KVM 4 and up).
- Pick the data center closest to the people and services your workflows talk to.
- Open the n8n panel link Hostinger shows for the server and create the owner account. This is the admin login for your instance.
- Point a subdomain such as automations.yourbusiness.com at the server IP with an A record, so webhooks use your own domain instead of a raw IP.
- Turn on automatic backups or take a snapshot in hPanel before you build anything important.
- Build one small workflow first, such as form submission to email, and confirm it fires before you migrate anything else.
What to automate first on a new n8n server
A new server with unlimited executions tempts people to automate everything at once. We start with the workflows that touch revenue, because they pay for the server in the first month and show quickly whether the setup is solid.
Each of these is a single workflow with a trigger, two or three steps and a notification, which makes them good first builds: easy to test, easy to fix, and useful from day one.
- New lead alert: website form or Google Business Profile message goes to the CRM and sends the owner a text within a minute.
- Missed call follow-up: when a call goes unanswered, the caller gets a text with a booking link.
- Review request: when a job is marked done, the customer gets a short message with the link to leave a Google review.
- Weekly numbers: every Monday, calls, forms and reviews from the past week arrive in one email.
The mistake that makes self-hosting look cheaper than it is
Comparing the promo price of a VPS with the regular price of a cloud plan. Hostinger prices are an introductory rate paid upfront for the term, and the renewal price is higher: KVM 2 goes from $8.79 to $14.99 a month. Budget with the renewal price and the comparison is still usually in favor of self-hosting once you pass a few thousand executions a month, but it is an honest comparison.
The second mistake is skipping updates. A self-hosted n8n is yours to update. Plan ten minutes a month to update the Docker image, and always update after a snapshot, so a bad release costs you a rollback, not a weekend.
What we would use in your position
If you run a local service business or a small agency and you already know you will use n8n for real work, we would take Hostinger KVM 2 on the 24-month term with the n8n template. It removes the execution meter, leaves room for AI nodes, and the monthly cost stays below a single Cloud Pro plan even after renewal.
When it is not the right choice: if nobody on your team is willing to log into a server once a month, or you only need two or three small workflows, start on n8n Cloud Starter. Paying a little more to never think about updates is a fair trade. And if you would rather not run automations yourself at all, that is exactly what our AI automation service handles.
